એક દિવસ શ્રીકૃષ્ણએ એમની પત્ની રુકમિણીને જણાવ્યું કે દુર્વાસા મુનિ નદીના સામેના કિનારે આવ્યા છે. એમણે મુનિને પ્રસન્ન કરવા માટે ઉત્તમ પ્રકારનું ભોજન તૈયાર કરવા કહ્યું. રુકમિણી ભોજન તૈયાર કરીને નદીએ ગયાં પણ ત્યાં નદી પાર કરાવવા કોઈ નાવ કે નાવિક નહોતા.

રુકમિણીએ શ્રીકૃષ્ણની મદદ માંગી. શ્રીકૃષ્ણએ રુકમિણીને કહ્યું કે નદીને જઈને કહો, "નિત્ય બ્રહ્મચારી કૃષ્ણએ રસ્તો કરી આપવા કહ્યું છે". રુકમિણીને ખુબ જ નવાઈ લાગી કે શ્રીકૃષ્ણ તો પરણેલા છે અને કુટુંબ વાળા છે તો તેઓ નિત્ય બ્રહ્મચારી કેવી રીતે કહેવાય? છતાંય એમણે નદીને જઈને શ્રીકૃષ્ણએ કહ્યા મુજબ કહ્યું. નદીએ તરત જ રસ્તો કરી આપ્યો.

રુકમિણી દુર્વાસા મુનિ પાસે ગયાં અને એમને ભોજન કરાવ્યું. મુનિએ પ્રસન્ન થઈને એમને આશીર્વાદ આપ્યા. રુકમિણીએ પાછા ફરતી વખતે નદી પાર કરવા માટે દુર્વાસાની મદદ માંગી. દુર્વાસાએ એમને કહ્યું કે નદીને જઈને કહો, "નિત્ય ઉપવાસી દુર્વાસાએ રસ્તો કરી આપવા કહ્યું છે”. રુકમિણીને ખુબ જ નવાઈ લાગી કે હજી હમણાં જ મુનિએ આટલું ભોજન કર્યું છે છતાં પોતાને નિત્ય ઉપવાસી કેમ કહે છે?

એમણે મુનિને કાંઈ જ પૂછ્યું નહીં અને એમના કહ્યા મુજબ નદીને કહ્યું. નદીએ તરત જ રસ્તો કરી આપ્યો. રુકમિણીને ઘણી જ જીજ્ઞાસા થઇ. નદી પાર કરીને શ્રીકૃષ્ણ પાસે પહોંચીને રુકમિણીએ એમને પૂછ્યું, "તમે પોતે પરણેલા અને કુટુંબ વાળા છો છતાં પોતાને નિત્ય બ્રહ્મચારી કહો છો. દુર્વાસા મુનિ ભરપેટ ભોજન કર્યા પછી પોતાને નિત્ય ઉપવાસી કહે છે. નદીએ આ બંને વાત સ્વીકારીને મને રસ્તો પણ કરી આપ્યો. મને તો કાંઈ સમજાતું નથી".

શ્રીકૃષ્ણ હસી પડ્યા. એમણે રુકમિણીને કહ્યું, "અમે બંને આત્મજ્ઞાની છીએ. અમે કોઈ પણ કાર્ય કરીએ ત્યારે જાણીએ છીએ કે એ કાર્ય તો શરીર કરે છે. આત્મા તો સદા અનાસક્ત છે - આત્મા કોઈ કાર્યથી બંધાતો નથી. કોઈ પણ કાર્ય કરતી વખતે દુર્વાસા અને હું સાવ જ અનાસક્ત હોઈએ છીએ. અમે મનથી ક્યારેય એ કાર્ય સાથે બંધાતા નથી. એટલે જ હું નિત્ય બ્રહ્મચારી છું અને દુર્વાસા નિત્ય ઉપવાસી છે".

આપણે જો આ મહાન સત્ય સમજી શકીએ તો આપણે સુખી અને સંતોષી જીવન જીવી શકીએ.

Shri Krishna Brahmachari

One day, Krishna informed his wife Rukmini that Sage Durvasa is camping on the other side of the river. He asked her to prepare a sumptuous meal for the sage to please him. Rukmini prepared the food but when she went to the river, she did not find any boat or boatman to take her across the river.

So she asked Krishna to help. Krishna asked her to tell the river, “The Nitya brahmachari (celibate – one who is not married) Krishna has asked her to part and give way to cross.” Rukmini was surprised as how Krishna can be considered a celibate as he was a married man with family. But still she said what she was asked to say and the river indeed parted and let her cross it.

Rukmini went to the sage Durvasa and offered him food. The sage was indeed pleased and he blessed her. When she had to leave, she urged him to help her cross the river. Sage Durvasa asked her to tell the river, “The Nitya Upavasi (one who has never eaten food) Durvasa has asked her to part and give way to cross.” Again Rukmini was surprised and thought, “Just now he had a sumptuous meal, yet he calls himself Nitya Upavasi?” 

She did not ask him anything and followed his instruction. The river indeed parted and gave her way when she told that the Nitya Upavasi had asked her to part. Rukmini reached the other side and unable to control her curiosity, asked Krishna, “You called yourself Nitya Brahmachari even though you are married with family and the sage called himself Nitya Upavasi after eating the food I offered him. And the river agreed to both and parted. I am not able to understand.”

Krishna laughed and told her, “We both are realized souls. When we perform an action we understand that it is the body which is performing the action. The soul is unattached. The soul is never bound by anything. While doing any action, Durvasa and I remain unattached. We are never bound to that action. So I am Nitya Brahmachari and Durvasa is Nitya Upavasi”.

Once we understand this great truth, we can live a contended and happy life.
